Working Holiday Visa – Panorama

Pre-Arrival Stories

9th September 2006 – Off I Go…

Colleges, soldiers, family, friends and others…

The 21st of Dec 2005, I received an email with the text “To Canada! – Your application for a one year travel & work visa have been approved!”

A few days ago (5th of Sept, 2006) 2:30pm MST, or 22:30 Swedish time, it was all settled.

After months and perhaps years of longing back after more adventures and experiences it was all settled.

I can hardly believe this feeling of excitement I get from transferring yet another “dream” to a “goal” to “reality”.

I leave behind the safe “bubble” in Sweden with a well paid job, newly renovated and gorgeous apartment and a Ferrari red Mazda (which is for sale, btw). Trade this with something uncertain, something exciting, some thrilling adventure  in the Rockies in the country that made such an warm impact on me, Canada.

As my beloved father so hastily recognized, I don’t make even close to what I do today here in Sweden. However, in Canada I will not pay 30% income tax, and 25%sales tax as I do here and living costs are way lower as well.

I met the person that made me such a powerful impression already 2003 in Paris, again in Athens this summer. Mr Jim Rohn. He says so elegantly;

For things to change, I have to change.

For things to get better, I need to get better.

Don’t wish it was easier, wish I were better.

Don’t  wish for less problems, wish for more skills.

The road of change leads to the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. In the spirit of Nike, days, perhaps even weeks, of planning have reached its threshold and it’s time to “Just Do It!”.

So, what’s happening over there in Canada?

I will live and work at a resort called Panorama Mountain Village (www.SkiPanorama.com) in their Front Desk. Panorama is not far away from Fernie where I used to study not too long ago.

If you would like to visit I do have some perks already brought to my attention from the current staff. Among others is that friends and family to the staff gets 20% discount on resort related products like ski passes and such.

If you golf, you REALLY have to have a look at Grey Wolf Golf (www.greywolfgolf.com) which one of the most beautiful courses in the world!

Panorama is located approx. 3.5hrs (300km) South West of Calgary and approx 1.5hrs SW of Banff in British Columbia.  The closest town to Panorama is Invermere.

For those of you interested, I have the aspiration to let you (as usual) check in the stories, the sights and sounds on my newly updated website www.s-mart.se. For those who didn’t know about it, there is already more than 4years of travel and experiences to be read about and enjoyed. It encompasses everything from diving with tiger sharks, dwarfminke whales, dolphins, turtles, work at crocodile research farm, Australian National Team selection, expeditions of different natures, hiking, climbing, mountaineering (both successful and not so successful…) *smile*

I also had a blog made available for your enjoyment, to be able to send a quick “hey, how are you doing” mess if you don’t have the time or effort to write me an email. The blog you find here: (no longer available – send me an email instead!) ;))

If you want to call me, I recommend using www.Skype.com and you will call me for free, just add my name: StefanMartensson78

To round things up, I start the new job the 20th of Nov and I will leave a few days before that and be away for about a year.

I sincerely hope many of you will take the opportunity to enjoy the Canadian hospitality, kindness, openness and their absolutely stunning natural resources! (Powder snow!!

15th Sept 2006 – Seasons first snow!! — It’s going to be a great season!

16th September – Flight tickets purchased! It’s really happening!
