Arches NP – Moab – Canyonlands NP – Monument Valley

Arches NP – Moab – Canyonlands NP – Natural Bridges NM – Monument Valley

Who would have thought it was really hot in the desert?? I am blonde and blue-eyed, but this fact actually never crossed my mind.. I got a rude awakening to this fact fairly quickly *smile*

Leaving the Tetons and Jackson, WY the next I passed through Salt Lake City, spent the night at a hotel and continued driving the next day… The further south the hotter it got, thank God for air-conditioning!

When I got to Arches National Park, I got a hold of a guy (Park Ranger) that on his spare time when 4wheeling on the backroads quite a bit, so I spent 45min talking to him about different trails I could do around Moab and on the outskirts of Arches NP.

I started with Onion Creek Trail, which was a simple dirt road to follow, and go back the same way… You cross Onion Creek more than 20times and if you do this trail in the spring I suppose it’s lots harder with higher water in the creek…

After that I decided to take the backroads to Canyonlands National Park. To do this, you need to take The Shafer Trail. I did a detour on the White Rim trail to Musselmans Arch before coming back and into Canyonlands National Park.

When I finished the Shafer Trail and got into the campgrounds, they were by Murphys Law all filled. At the very last site, a guy from Holland came out and offered me a campsite ticket at Dead Horse Point State Parks Campgrounds, 45min drive away… I took his offer and gave him a couple of cold beers as a thanks and was on my way…

By this time it was pitch dark outside and I was driving and driving, and finally I found the campgrounds and made dinner and fell asleep fairly quickly after a long day.

From there, it was more dirt roads visiting Natural Bridges National Monument and headed down to Monument Valley where I spent the night.

After 4wheeling Monument Valley I headed north again over Lake Powell to Capitol Reef National Park and the Grand Staircase – Escalante National Monument.
